Curling or Buckling Shingles
When trapped heat builds up in your attic, the bottom edge of your shingles can heat up and curl. Curled shingles no longer lie flat, which means wind can get underneath them and water can work its way in. If you can see shingle edges lifting from the street or a neighbor’s second story, that’s worth a closer look.
Bald Spots or Granule Loss
Asphalt shingles are coated in granules that protect against UV and impact damage. As shingles age — or after a hailstorm — those granules shed. Dark, uneven patches on the roof surface, or a buildup of gritty granules in your gutters and downspouts, are both signs the shingles’ protective layer is wearing thin.
Hail Bruising or Dents
After a hailstorm, check any metal on your property — gutters, vents, AC units, window screens — for small dents. Hail damage on shingles can be harder to spot from the ground than dented metal, so if you see impact marks anywhere else on the property, it’s a strong reason to have the roof itself inspected, ideally before you file or finalize an insurance claim.
Clogged or Overflowing Gutters
Gutters are part of your roofing system, not a separate item. When they clog with leaves and granules, water backs up onto the roof deck instead of draining away, which accelerates rot and leaks at the roof edge. Cracked, Lifted, or Rusted Flashing
Flashing is the metal that seals the joints and transitions on your roof — around chimneys, skylights, and where different roof planes meet. Water Stains or Sagging Inside the Home
Brown or yellow stains on your ceiling, a musty smell in the attic, or a sagging spot in the roofline are signs that water has already found its way in. By the time you see interior damage, the roof issue is usually further along than it looks from outside.
Your Roof Is Approaching 15–20 Years Old
Most standard asphalt shingle roofs are rated for 20–25 years, but many Texas insurance carriers now move older roofs from replacement-cost to actual-cash-value coverage once they pass the 15–20 year mark — meaning a claim on an older roof pays out significantly less. If your roof is in that range, an inspection can tell you where you actually stand before that shift affects a future claim.

Even if you don’t see obvious damage, it’s worth having a professional inspection after any hailstorm or high-wind event in your area.
